I have been traveling through the midwest and the western United States for more than four decades. Most of those travels were in pursuit of the elusive photographic image. Not the postcard of a scenic wonder, but of the unique beauty of our landscape and the character of our small towns. I often stop to make a photograph of the place that many pass by in their hurry to reach their destination. On the shoulder of the road, I find the opportunity to see, to listen, and to enjoy.
At first there is an impression of silence when you turn off the car. You may only hear your shoes on the gravel or a truck rushing by. But, if you pause to listen, you will begin to hear the wind and the sounds of life that surround you. You’ll feel the moment envelop you and you’ll sense the peace of solitude in the open space.
